Five Medical Careers that you can Do Without Studying Medicine

When people think of the Medical field, the first thing that comes to mind is a Doctor. Nursing comes in at number two. But did you know that are so many other careers in the medical field that are just as rewarding as being a doctor. Yes that's right! You do not have to study medicine to actually work and make a difference in the health industry. Below we highlight five career paths that can take besides medicine that can guarantee you a place in the healthcare world.

1. NURSING. Of course this takes the first place. Nursing can be a very rewarding career as mostly, you can find nurses working right beside the doctors who are regarded as medical counterparts. Nurses have to complete a nursing program and meet the requirements stipulated by an authorized body before receiving a license to practice nursing. Nurses help provide and coordinate patient care, offer emotional and physical support to patients and their families and also educate the public about various health conditions and hygiene.

2. MEDICAL ASSISTANT. These are the professionals who are responsible for the daily management and effective running of medical facilities. Basically, they ensure that things run smoothly. Medical assistants sometimes help with medical exams, perform basic laboratory tests, dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilise medical instruments and environment.

3. MEDICAL TRANSLATOR/INTERPRETER. Healthcare translators/interpreters, work to facilitate effective communication between doctors, nurses and healthcare providers and their patients. Some patients have Limited English Proficiency (LEP), and some are deaf or hard of hearing hence the need for medical interpreters. These professionals translate medical test materials, bulletins and education materials for the public and healthcare providers alike. 

3. MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN. These technicians work in medical laboratories to prepare and analyze bodily fluids or samples for proper diagnosis and treatment for health conditions. They run these tests to help determine and monitor procedures carried out on patients. Some knowledge of microbiology would be an added bonus to this line career.

4. SURGICAL ASSISTANTS/TECHNICIANS. These are health-care professionals who who help surgeons with tasks like making incisions, closing stitches, arranging and sterilising surgical equipment, while preparing the operation theatre. Most surgical technicians usually work long hours in hospitals, on their feet so it takes a great physical stamina and a long  concentration span to actually succeed in this career.
