NIGER CRISIS: A LOOMING AFRICAN DILEMMA

 

The recent coup in Niger Republic which resulted in the sacking of the democratically elected government of the country led by Mohamed Bazoum, has not only heightened disturbances in the country but has also ignited face-offs between her and  other sister African Nations and the world at large wth : 

- The attack of the the France embassy despite warnings from France. 

- The withdrawal of French and other foreign nationals from the country.

- The resistance of ECOWAS' ultimatum demanding the reinstatement of the ousted democratically elected president.

- The threat of military action against Niger by ECOWAS community. 

- The closure of borders and cut of ties amongst countries in the region; already Nigeria has embarked on power supply cut to the country. 

- The collaboration with some other African countries of Algeria, Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali and Chad with Niger to resist pressure to return the country to a constitutional rule;

Are worrisome developments which are indications that strive and civil unrest is brewing in Niger which may develop into a severe threat to the peace and stability of the Continent.
